The Yeonggwang Beopseongpo Danoje Festival is a representative folk festival of Korea, where tradition and the sea harmonize. It is a historic festival with a 500-year history, dating back to the mid-Joseon Dynasty, held annually around the 5th day of the 5th lunar month in the Beopseongpo area. In accordance with the region's traditional focus on fishing, traditional rituals have been passed down, such as praying to Inui Mountain God for the village's peace and abundant catch, and holding a Dragon King ritual at sea. In 2012, it was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing its traditional cultural value, and has today established itself as a nationwide traditional cultural festival. It is a representative traditional festival that reflects on the wisdom of ancestors and community spirit, and promotes the inheritance and development of traditional culture.
During the festival, various rites and folk events such as Nanjangteugi, Yongwangje (Dragon King Ritual), Seonyunori (Boat Play), Sansinje (Mountain God Ritual), and Dangsanje (Village Guardian God Ritual) are held. Additionally, diverse competition events unfold, including the Student Tea Etiquette Competition, Supjaeng-i National Gugak Competition, Beopseongpo Danoje Ssireum Competition, Dano Student Art Festival, Folk Game Competition, and Youth Festival.
A variety of participatory and experiential events are prepared, such as Dansimjulnori (Rope Play), washing hair with changpo (sweet flag), tteokmechigi (rice cake pounding), stamp tour, swinging, traditional games, Dano kite flying, golden duck catching, and children's costume experience, allowing family tourists and foreigners to directly experience Korea's unique holiday culture.
Ancillary facilities such as a Comprehensive Tourist Information Center, County Administration Promotion Hall, Local Products Promotion Hall, Children's Playground (Air Bounce), Tourist Rest Area, Wheelchair/Stroller Rental, Breastfeeding Room, and Medical/Fire Support are operated at the festival venue.
The festival is held at Dano Madang (Danoje Transmission Education Center), and admission is free. The address is 154-13 Jingulbi-gil, Beopseong-myeon, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do.
