Hongseong is the birthplace of General Choi Yeong, a renowned Goryeo-era commander who remained loyal until the end; Seong Sam-mun, who resisted injustice with unwavering integrity and became famous throughout the world; Buddhist Monk Han Yong-un, one of the 33 national representatives who resisted Japanese colonial rule; General Kim Jwa-jin, who brought news of victory from the Battle of Cheongsalli; Han Seong-jun, a master of Joseon dance and the originator of Korean traditional dance; and Lee Eung-no, a contemporary artist more famous abroad. In Hongseong, a town of historical figures, various programs such as experiences, performances, and exhibitions are held annually, selecting key figures based on their achievements and anecdotes. It is the nation's premier edutainment festival where you can enjoy and learn about historical figures from Hongseong. If you visit the Hongseong Historical Figures Festival, which coincides with Children's Day events, there will be plenty to enjoy.
The festival will be held in the Hongju Eupseong area of Hongseong (27 Amun-gil, Hongseong-eup, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do) from May 2 to May 3, 2026.
Admission is free.
Various programs can be enjoyed at the festival, including Choi Yeong experience, Seong Sam-mun experience, cultural experiences, play experiences, performance-type programs, exhibition-type programs, and food. Choi Yeong experiences include a general's costume experience and photo zone, wall building, archery, sword fighting, sugunogi (Korean traditional military skill), cheonbono (crossbow), prison experience, sword/shield/bow making, General Choi Yeong mini book art/fan drawing/history quiz/ddakji (Korean traditional game) play/key ring making. Seong Sam-mun experiences include scholar's gat (traditional hat) making, Sanyuksin (Six Loyal Subjects) oath bracelet/seal making, Seong Sam-mun perler bead key ring/clay/cookie making, scholar's Gyojasang (traditional meal table)/sound making, royal snack making, Gonryongpo (dragon robe) decoration/mother-of-pearl gat decoration/mother-of-pearl Hanbok bookmark making, Seong Sam-mun aphorism scroll making, Jiphyeonjeon (Royal Research Institute) calligraphy experience, and loyalty/righteousness/integrity fan making. Cultural experiences include historical figure symbol key ring making, bead craft, woodcraft characters, face painting, aviation equipment, baseball, football, non-alcoholic cocktail tasting, nursing, Tuho (traditional stick throwing game), planting companion plants, dental, and family photo taking. Play experiences include fire safety, police motorcycle riding, victory rice ball making, historical figure baking, petting zoo, marble clay, Zabong-i character cheering stick making, eco-friendly, global traditional games, water bomb zone, infant/toddler play zone, and laser survival zone.
