The Gwangju Chunjang Festival of Memories is Gwangju's largest and representative festival, originating from Chungjang-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, the best commercial district in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. This festival holds special significance as Korea's first memory-themed festival, encompassing generations and social strata through the universal theme of "memories." As it unfolds around significant venues in the history of world democracy, such as Geumnam-ro and the May 18th Democracy Square, the festival embodies historical and cultural value beyond a simple local event.
The Chunjang Festival has been externally recognized for its excellence, selected as a 2024-2025 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Cultural Tourism Festival, and is currently designated as a Republic of Korea Honorary Cultural Tourism Festival. Furthermore, it achieved the feat of consecutive international awards, winning the Best Parade Award and being selected as a World Festival City at the 2024 Asia Pinnacle Awards, followed by the Best Overall Entertainment Program Award in 2025. In the future, it has a great ambition to develop into an international festival encompassing the culture and memories of all of Asia, beyond the region, through cooperation with the National Asia Culture Center.
The festival consists of daily Geumnam-ro main programs, Geumnam-ro side programs, Sinseoseok-ro programs, Chungjang-ro and Art Street programs, and collaborative events. Key events include the Opening Show, Asia Culture Street, Chungjang Glowing Night, Rice Ball Contest, Five Districts Community Play, and Residents' Self-Governance Festival. Side programs include Alice Playground, Healing Rest Area, Chungjang Fairytale Village, Glitter Mask Making, Unique Bicycle Play, Chess/Janggi Tournament, Boxing Tournament, and Floor Painting. Collaborative events include the 4th Gwangju Busking World Cup, Raon Festa, and Art Street SAI_Project.
The festival takes place in Geumnam-ro, Chungjang-ro, May 18th Democracy Square, and areas around Art Street. The address is Geumnam-ro 3-ga, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
