The 2026 Suwon Theater Festival plans to offer an inspiring festival experience where "leaving the ordinary to observe the ordinary" allows us to reflect on our lives through experimental and diverse public space theater, transforming everyday spaces into beautiful artistic stages. In lush May, a grand feast of diverse performing arts, "Party in the Forest," including street theater and circus, will be held. Starting in 1996 under the name "Suwon Hwaseong International Theater Festival," focused on theater and outdoor plays around Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, the Suwon Theater Festival moved its venue to Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus in 2018 and has since focused on 'Theater in public space,' including street theater. The Suwon Theater Festival aims to invigorate monotonous daily routines for citizens through new artistic experiences and to awaken joyful artistic imagination about everyday spaces by utilizing public spaces like parks as artistic stages. Furthermore, the Suwon Theater Festival aims to support excellent street art groups, discover new artists, promote the development of 'public space theater' in Korea, and play a role in cultural exchange between nations through international collaboration. In 2026, experimental and diverse public space theater performances offering new artistic experiences are planned. This includes 16 recently produced domestic works, including new productions, and three French focus programs connecting Korea and France, celebrating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. At the 2026 Suwon Theater Festival, citizens will be able to experience the true essence of the festival, "leaving the ordinary to observe the ordinary," through new art that contains serious discussions about our lives.
