The Yeondeunghoe is held with a lantern parade from Dongdaemun Stadium to Jogyesa Temple, a Traditional Culture Zone, Eoullim Madang (Lantern Lighting Ceremony), and Hoehyang Hanmadang (Grand Assembly). With a long history of over 1,200 years and passed down as a living cultural heritage, Yeondeunghoe was recognized for its intangible heritage value and designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in April 2012. Furthermore, its generational transmission, embodying the values of voluntary community and individual creativity, as well as the values of participation, consideration, and equality among diverse people, were globally recognized, leading to its inscription on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2020.
The main programs of the Yeondeunghoe are as follows. The main programs include the Lotus Lantern Parade and the Traditional Culture Zone. Auxiliary programs include the Traditional Lantern Exhibition, Eoullim Madang, and Lantern Play. The Traditional Culture Zone is a program where consumers can participate. In addition, there are the Performance Zone, Daedong Hanmadang, and Gwanghwamun Lighting Ceremony.
The Yeondeunghoe takes place in the Jongno area. The main address is 99, Jong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Jongno 2(i)-ga).
Participation in the Yeondeunghoe is free of charge.
The Yeondeunghoe will be held from May 16, 2026 to May 17, 2026.
