The Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival is an experiential festival that offers the 'true taste' of Yeongdeok snow crabs. During the reign of King Chungmok of Goryeo (29th king), a man named Jeong Bang-pil was appointed as the first magistrate of Yeonghae. When the magistrate toured the village, he tasted and highly praised the Yeongdeok snow crab. Because the shape of the crab's legs resembled bamboo, it was named 'daege' (meaning 'bamboo crab'). Yeongdeok County designated Chayu Village as the original village of snow crabs based on this history. When King Wang Geon and Gyeon Hwon were rivals, Wang Geon visited Chayu Village and was presented with crabs, thus it is known as the 'thousand-year taste' presented to the king.
