The Danjong Culture Festival is Yeongwol's representative local cultural festival, which elevates the spirit of King Danjong, the 6th monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, and his loyal subjects into a festival. This festival, which began in 1967 under the name "Danjongje," changed its name to "Danjong Culture Festival" starting from its 24th iteration in 1990 and has since been approaching visitors with various experiences. The 58th Danjong Culture Festival will be held in Yeongwol, where Jangneung, the tomb of King Danjong, the 6th monarch of Joseon, is located. This year's Danjong Culture Festival will feature a variety of events, including the Danjong State Funeral, Danjong Royal Ancestral Rites, Queen Jeongsun Selection Contest, Kudzu Rope Pulling, experiential events, participatory events, and performance events.
The 58th Danjong Culture Festival will be held for three days from April 24 (Fri) to 26 (Sun), 2026.
It will be held at Yeongwol Donggang Riverside, and the address is 61-19 Hasong-ri, Yeongwol-eup, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
Admission is free.
Main programs include the reenactment of Danjong's State Funeral, a costume parade, a star-studded parade, Danjong Royal Ancestral Rites, kudzu rope pulling, the Queen Jeongsun Selection Contest, performance events, and the 2nd Danjong Culinary Festival (Royal Court Food Contest). The traditional event program features Yeongsanjae. Literature/Exhibition/Participation programs include local artists' exhibition, a village harmony health gymnastics competition, a food market, traditional food reenactment experience, an academic symposium, the 26th Essay Day, general/student essay contests, and drawing/manga drawing contests. New programs include the royal wedding ceremony (Garye), a Danjong special exhibition, pre-performances, and a national choir competition. Permanent programs include Kkaebi Noriteo (Goblin Playground), a remind traditional wedding, a Jangneung experience zone, Yeounae/Youth Market, multicultural food experience, mission stamps, Yeongteori Market, a fireworks and drone show, Donggang Cafe, and smart tourism services.
