Jongmyo Myohyeonrye

Festival Highlights
- Joseon Dynasty royal ritual
- Life and status of royal women
- Original musical

'Myohyeonrye (廟見禮)' was a ritual in the Joseon Dynasty where a queen or crown princess, having completed her wedding, paid respects at Jongmyo Shrine, where the ancestral tablets of past kings and queens were enshrined. As the only national ritual in the Joseon Dynasty where women participated at Jongmyo, it is a special historical event that offers a glimpse into the lives and status of royal women. The 2026 "Jongmyo Myohyeonrye" consists of an original musical 'Myohyeon, The Queen's Record' based on Myohyeonrye, and a royal costume experience event 'Becoming a Crown Prince/Princess and Taking Photos'. The original musical 'Myohyeon, The Queen's Record' reconstructs the Myohyeonrye of Queen Inwon, King Sukjong's third queen, in 1703 (29th year of King Sukjong's reign). It tells a story of conflict between national etiquette and personal emotions, and the poignant tale with her father Kim Ju-sin, who could no longer treat his daughter as before after she became queen.
