Uibyeong (righteous army) refers to civilians who organized their own military to overcome national crises during foreign invasions, solely with the determination to save the nation, making them a symbol of patriotism. The Honguijanggun Festival is the largest-scale righteous army festival in the nation, held annually around April 22nd, the day of the righteous army's uprising, to commemorate General Kwak Jae-u (Mangudang), who was the first in the nation to raise a righteous army during the Imjin War in 1592, along with 17 commanders and countless other righteous soldiers, and to inherit their spirit.
Main programs include the Opening Ceremony, Righteous Army Departure Parade & Torch March, Hongui Night Walk, Righteous Army Play Zone & Tournament, Righteous Army Theme Street, Righteous Army Seodang (traditional school), and Joseon Marketplace Operation. Sub-programs include the 10th Lee Ho-seop Singing Contest, Citizens' Harmony Festival, and Uiryeong Saturday-love Watermelon Festival. Consumer participation programs feature a festival street parade, Righteous Army amusement park, and Hongui Yeopjeon Tour. Other events include street busking, a special exhibition at the Insect Ecology Learning Center, and the National Folk Bullfighting Competition.
