Eumseong Pumba Festival

Festival Highlights
- Beggar Saint the late Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong
- Practice Love and Sharing

The Eumseong Pumba Festival is rooted in the life of the beggar saint, the late Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong. Despite his disability, the late Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong went around the villages in the Mugeuk-ri area of Geumwang-eup, collecting food and feeding beggars who couldn't even beg themselves, earning him recognition as a saint of love. Pumba is an onomatopoeic word used in the refrain of the Gakseori Taryeong, serving as a rhythmic beat. The Eumseong Pumba Festival combines the traditionally passed-down Pumba with Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong's philanthropic spirit, creating a spiritual and cultural festival born with the premise that spiritual poverty and inequality should be healed through satire and humor, and "healed with love and sharing."
Main programs include the National Pumba Street Parade, Pumba House Building Contest, National Pumba Rapper Contest, and Eumseong N Pumba Contest. Ancillary programs include the Pumba King Selection Contest, Rapper Camp, National Pumba Photo Contest, National Pumba Song Festival, National Youth Dance Performance Contest, Pumba Musical, Love and Hope for the Homeless, Today's Pumba, Pumba Live Performance, and 2pan 4pan Nanjangpan (Chaos), among others. *The food and beverage information for the festival venue below is based on the previous year's (2025) festival. The 2026 festival information is currently being updated.* The Eumseong Pumba Festival is rooted in the life of the beggar saint, the late Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong. He became the foundation for the establishment of Kkottongne by Father Oh Woong-jin, and despite his own disability, he went around the villages in the Mugeuk-ri area of Geumwang-eup, collecting food and feeding beggars who couldn't even beg themselves. For this reason, his life is praised as that of a saint of love, inimitable by anyone. Various theories about Pumba have been handed down. Pumba is said to be an onomatopoeic word used in the refrain of the Gakseori Taryeong (beggar's song), serving as a rhythmic beat. The Eumseong Pumba Festival combines the traditional Pumba, which has become synonymous with wandering street performers, with the philanthropic spirit of Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong. Even though our lives in modern times have become more affluent, spiritual poverty and inequality still exist. This festival was born from the premise that society should experience catharsis through satire and humor and be "healed with love and sharing." The Eumseong Pumba Festival is also a spiritual culture festival that practices love and sharing.
