Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Festival

Festival Highlights
- Commemoration of self-initiated reform movement
- Inheritance of self-reliance and equality values

The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Festival is a meaningful event held annually in May to commemorate the self-initiated reform movement of peasants who rose up against the unjust tyranny of the feudal system during the Joseon Dynasty. The Donghak Peasant Revolution is regarded as a historical event that marked the starting point of Korea's modernization and greatly influenced the national independence movement. This revolution began with the Gobu Peasant Uprising led by Jeon Bong-jun on January 10, 1894, and subsequently spread nationwide after the peasant army achieved its first victory in the Battle of Hwangtojae. In particular, the festival has been held annually since May 11, the date of the victory in the Battle of Hwangtojae. The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Festival serves as a venue for citizens to freely participate in various programs and cultural events to reflect on its historical significance and to modernize and develop the values of self-reliance and equality pursued by the Donghak peasant army. Through this, it aims to connect the spirit of the past with the present era and evolve into a meaningful festival where everyone can sympathize and participate.
